Lasse Thoresen: “Diphonie III: Nature Processional” (Op. 39, No. 3) for Vocal Sextet
(2021–22)
UNAVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE UNTIL FIRST PERFORMANCE
Nature Processional is designed to be an opening piece for a concert with the vocal sextet. Most of the musical elements are extracted from recordings of Norwegian and Swedish folk music. The ending section of the piece is a springar—a triple-metre folk dance—based on Berit Opheim’s recorded performance. Opheim has been the source of many of my findings in folk music and has performed my music several times. I dedicate this piece to her.
Since every hall is different with regard to size and resonance, the performers are free to adapt the durations of the fermata sections, and even to omit whole sections marked by rehearsal letters. Based on the idea of two processions communicating with each other across the hall, improvisations over the given material can also be developed. Having eventually entered the stage, the singers take their normal positions in the ensemble and perform the final section; Springar.
